WELCOME

COMULIS (Correlated Multimodal Imaging in Life Sciences) is an EU-funded COST Action that aims at fueling urgently needed collaborations in the field of correlated multimodal imaging, promoting and disseminating its benefits through showcase pipelines, and paving the way for its technological advancement and implementation as a versatile tool in biological and preclinical research.

Within the time frame of the COMULIS COST Action, we will organize six training schools and workshops in the field of correlative multimodal imaging. The Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) is delighted to be hosting the first training school which will be held in Oeiras, Portugal on Sunday February 9th to Friday February 14th 2020.

This first training school is called “A Practical Approach to CLEM”. The school is targeting users who are interested in establishing Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM) in their home laboratories, but who may have limited technical resources and training in this area. As such the School will be focused on getting new laboratories set up to do CLEM. By inviting an array of international CLEM experts to Portugal, we aim to show the participants CLEM procedures that can straightforward to duplicate. Furthermore, we aim to give the training School participants the knowledge and skills to start doing CLEM at their home institution.

We cordially invite scientists from all across Europe who are interested in setting up CLEM experiments in their home laboratories to join us in Portugal. We also invite companies interested in working with these new CLEM experts, to join us in our sponsorship program.

TARGETED PARTICIPANTS

This COMULIS Training School targets participants who are interested in establishing Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM) in their home laboratories. Participants will gain hands-on-experience in light and electron microscopy and interact with experts in the field.

This Training School targets users with some Electron Microscopy and some Light Microscopy experience who are interested in implementing combined Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy Workflows in their research.

Practical sessions with hands-on training about pre-embedding Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy
Advanced lectures detailing steps beyond these first initial workflows and the introduction to techniques to decide which of many Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy workflows is appropriate for a given project

REGISTRATION AND MOTIVATION LETTER

Registration can be done HERE.

The course is supported by the COMULIS COST Action, however, a minimal registration fee will be charged to cover items not covered by COST or the training school sponsors.

Academia 150 Euros
Industry 250 Euros

The registration fee will cover lunches, coffee breaks, the conference dinner and course materials.

For selection purposes, please note that your application will not be considered without a brief motivation letter, which should include:

why you want to learn CLEM,
how you will apply CLEM in your research
why you are interested in this particular course.

The recommended length is 250 – 300 words. Please don’t send novels, it will not help your application.

The registration deadline is November 22nd, 2019.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Eight (8) selected eligible participants from the COMULIS COST Action member labs will receive financial support to attend the course. The stipend will cover registration, travel costs, accommodation and some meals.

For selection purposes for the financial support please succinctly tell us why you need the support. The recommended length is 250 – 300 words.

COURSE ACCEPTANCE AND PAYMENT

The registration fee should only be paid after acceptance to the course. Applicants will receive an email approximately 2 weeks after the application deadline with notification of acceptance or wait-list status. Accepted participants will receive a link and further instructions for the payment.

If payment is not received by the deadline specified in the acceptance e-mail, the participant will forfeit their spot and the opportunity will be offered to wait-listed participants.

No visa support letters will be issued until payment of the registration fee is confirmed, however further details will be provided for participants needing visa applications.

Single rooms and double rooms with breakfast included have been reserved for 5 nights (check-in Sunday February 9 and check-out February 14, 2020) at Inatel Oeiras.

The room rate for 2019 is:

Double room/per night: 46.80€

This price includes breakfast and local taxes.

We expect the room rate to be very similar in 2020 but the hotel has not yet confirmed the final room cost for bookings during the CLEM Training School.

Located just around the corner from the hotel is the Oeiras Marina with several different restaurants for evening dinners. Additionally, located close to the institute and in the center of Oeiras, there are many other nice locations for dinner.

The event will be hosted at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), located at Rua da Quinta Grande, 6, in Oeiras, Portugal.

TRANSPORTATION

Airport to Hotel:

Lisbon International Airport is located about 25 km from Oeiras. The easiest way is to take a taxi directly to the hotel – however, please note that taxi travel is not refundable by COST.

If you wish to organize a taxi pick-up, we recommend contacting a private taxi company who will meet you at the arrival gate at the Lisbon airport. The drivers speak English and have worked with us and our guests very often over the last 7 years.

We have advised the company that if multiple people arrive at the same time, it would be ok to propose sharing a taxi so you can share the costs. If you do not wish to share a taxi, please just let the company know that in your email communications with them.

Depending on your luck with traffic (which should be ok on a Sunday) it usually takes about 25 minutes to reach Oeiras from the Lisbon airport by taxi.

Public Transport

Metro to Lisbon, Cais-Sodré

A cheaper way to get to Oeiras is to take the subway (Metro) from the airport to Cais-Sodré (the ticket costs about 1,40 euros + 50 cents for the one-time card deposit and is valid for one journey, during 1 hr after validation). You will need to switch metro lines part way. Once at Cais-Sodré, you can then take the train to Oeiras.

Bus to Lisbon, Cais-Sodré

The Aerobus also goes from the airport directly to Cais-Sodré (the ticket costs about 3,50 euros). Once at Cais-Sodré, you can then take the train to Oeiras.

Train from Lisbon, Cais-Sodré to Oeiras

There are train connections every 20 minutes from Cais-Sodré Station to Oeiras. The trip should take about 25 minutes to Oeiras (the ticket costs about 1.85 euros). From Oeiras train station it is a 15 minute walk to the hotel, or a 5 minute walk to the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência. There are also taxis located just outside the train station if you are tired of walking by this point.

Depending on your luck with the train connections it can take 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Oeiras from the Airport by public transit.

If you plan to use the train / metro a few times you may wish to purchase a “zapping” ticket at the airport (or any metro station). This is a card that will also cost you 5o cents and that you can load with a set amount of money and use on almost all trains and metros in the Lisbon area. The benefit is each trip is a bit less expensive and you only need to buy one ticket. The downside is that you can only load set amounts (5, 10 or 15 euros) and it is hard (but not impossible) to get the money back if you don’t use it all.

Hotel to the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência:

The hotel is a 20 minute (1.5 km) walk to the institute along the roads, or a 30 minute (2.2 km) scenic walk along the ocean and through the parks.

If you are a runner or walker, bring your running shoes because the hotel overlooks a 5 km sea wall that is a great location to enjoy the ocean.

If the weather is unpleasant, then we advise the course participants to share a taxi to / from the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência. It should only be 5-6 euros each way.
